Lapis Lazuli's characteristic blue color is due to the presence of lazurite, a sulfur-rich mineral that absorbs red light and intensely reflects blue.

A little history

In ancient Egypt, Lapis Lazuli was more precious than gold. It was used to make sacred scarabs, funerary jewelry and cosmetic powders worn by the nobility. The famous Tutankhamen mask statuette contains abundant Lapis. In the Middle Ages, its powder - very expensive - was used as an ultramarine blue pigment to illuminate manuscripts or paint the robes of the Virgin Mary in religious art. It symbolized the divine, eternity and the quest for truth.
