Unlike gold plating, where a layer of gold just a few microns thick (one micron equals one thousandth of a millimeter) is delicately electroplated onto a base metal, Gold Filled involves a considerably larger quantity of gold. This high-quality process consists of mechanically bonding a a generous layer of solid gold, representing at least 5% of the jewel's total weight (i.e. 1/20th)to a sturdy core of brass or other base metal.
